Medieval Prisoner
Meet a medieval prisoner! In the 1200s, King Henry III gave permission for the Tolhouse to be used as a jail (gaol). But it wasn't until 1493 that Henry VII granted Great Yarmouth the right to try its own felons. Prisoners could wait years in the Tolhouse Hold for a travelling judge to hold their trial. This summer, you can meet a medieval prisoner and discover what it might have been like to be held at the Tolhouse and what punishments befell those there.
