Gressenhall Gardening Volunteer
Set in the beautiful Norfolk countryside, the outdoor spaces around Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse are one of the features which make the museum such a great place to visit.
Our gardening volunteers play a vital role in keeping the site looking its best by caring for flower beds, wildlife gardens and historically-inspired vegetable gardens. This role is an opportunity to exercise those green fingers and get creative with ideas of how to nurture and improve the space.
About the role
Gardening volunteers meet every Wednesday from around 10am to midday or early afternoon. Individuals or small teams take responsibility for a specific area and are coordinated by the volunteer team leader, overseen by the museum curator.
Tasks involve all aspects of caring for a small garden; planting and sowing seeds, watering, weeding, pruning, composting and general maintenance. Volunteers may also wish to talk to visitors about the gardens and let them know what plants they can see.
Experience and skills
General gardening experience is useful, although there is opportunity to learn under the guidance of the fellow-volunteer team. You will need to be happy working outdoors in different weather. conditions.
Other skills or attributes include the ability to work well as part of a team, the ability to follow instructions and the ability to follow health and safety instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

Volunteering takes place at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, Gressenhall, Dereham, NR20 4DR - on the main museum site and adjacent farm.
Tools, equipment and PPE will be provided.
Disclosure and barring
This role does not normally require a DBS check. If volunteers begin to lead groups or work with school or community groups more a DBS check may be required. This will be assessed as the role develops.
Application process
You will need to complete an application form and provide references. There will be an informal interview and potential volunteers will have opportunity to attend a taster session before committing to the role.
