About the role

Location: Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse Museum of Norfolk Life

Staff supervisor: Susie Childerhouse (Learning Officer)

Days: dependent upon school bookings and event days

Time: varied (school event days 9.30am to 2pm, timing for public events and holiday activities varies)

Purpose: assisting the learning team with formal and informal learning opportunities on the museum site.

Relation to museum objectives: We aim to inform and inspire people's interest in the cultural and natural heritage of Norfolk. Learning volunteers help Norfolk Museums Service (NMS) to achieve these aims by assisting school children and visitors to learn in an enjoyable, accessible and creative way.

What the role involves

  • Assisting with the delivery of school sessions
  • Assisting with events days
  • Assisting with holiday activities

Experience and skills

No qualifications are necessary but some experience of working with children or young people is essential. Also:

  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Patience and the ability to stay calm in pressurised situations
  • Team working
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to dress up

Training provided

Learning volunteers are trained through:

  • Observation of sessions
  • Buddying-up with experienced learning volunteers

Activity notes are provided and learning team staff are on hand to offer feedback and advice.

Disclosure and barring

You will be required to complete a DBS check.

Application process

You will need to be over 18 to apply for this role and will need to complete an application form. There will be an informal interview and potential volunteers will have opportunity to attend a taster session before committing to the role.
